On September 7th, 2014, the Filipino Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Boston celebrated San Lorenzo Ruiz’s 27th Feast Day at the Holy Name Church in West Roxbury. The three chapters  (West Roxbury, Quicy and Malden) of the Filipino Apostolate gathered for this special Mass celebrated by Fr. Cyriac Mattathilanickal MS, Chaplain of the Apostolate, and concelebrated by Fr. Alex  Castro, AA (homilist) and Fr. Fancis Alvazrez, SJS.

San Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint and martyr. He was born in Bonido, Manila in the 17th century, was educated in the local school of the Dominicans and married Rosario, with whom he had three children.  Lorenzo was falsely accused of killing a Spaniard, and seeking asylum, he boarded a ship to Japan with three Dominican priests. Due to a persecution of Christians in Japan, they were all immediately arrested upon their arrival.  On September 27, 1637, Lorenzo Ruiz and his companions were taken to a hill where they were tortured and killed. Upon his death, Lorenzo declared the following words: ” I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for the Lord; Had I a thousand lives, all these I shall offer to Him.” San Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified and later canonized (October 18th, 1987) by Pope John Paul II and his feast day is celebrated on September 28th.

During the Mass Fr. Cyriac gave a special blessing to current officers of the Filipino Apostolate and officially appointed three new officers: Jeffrey Pagulong (Pastoral Council Vice Chairman for Youth Ministry), Kaye Vito (Pastoral Council Youth Coordinator) and Aika Dusaban (Malden Chapter Youth Coordinator). Furthermore, in honor of San Lorenzo Ruiz, youth from the three chapters performed a reenactment of his life story.
