Haitian Independence Day Mass With Cardinal Sean O’Malley, January 2016

On Friday, January 1, 2016, the 213’Th anniversary of Haiti’s independence, about 1000 people from throughout the Archdiocese of Boston gathered at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston to celebrate Haiti’s independence and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.  Cardinal Sean O’Malley was the celebrant for the Mass and Very Rev. Kevin O’Leary, the rector of the cathedral, Rev. Michael Harrington, Director of the Office of Outreach and Cultural Diversity and many priests who serve the Haitian community were concelebrants.

In honor of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, before the beginning of Mass, everyone was invited to be part of a procession through the Holy Door. The Mass was celebrated in French, however one of the readings, the prayers of the faithful as well as many of the songs were sung in Creole. Cardinal Sean O’Malley delivered the homily in French.   After communion, everyone sang Te Deum, a hymn of thanksgiving, and at the end of Mass, the Haitian national anthem was sung. Fr. Garcia Breneville, the Coordinator for the Haitian Apostolate made a few remarks thanking everyone for their presence, the various communities who participated in the Mass, as well as thanking Cardinal Sean for being a good shepherd to the Haitian community within the Archdiocese of Boston.  .

This year, the community had the wonderful opportunity to gather together after Mass at a reception sponsored by the Consulate of Haiti to share the traditional soup served on Independence Day and to wish one another a happy new year.
