On Sunday, December 7, the Office of Persons with Disabilities sponsored a Mass celebrating people with Disabilities and their families. The Mass was held in the Bethany Chapel in the Pastoral Center, located in Braintree, MA. The outcome was great, where members of the Disability Community  from different ethnicities and regions of the Archdiocese of Boston braved the cold temperatures of a December morning to celebrate together this wonderful event.

The day started with Karen Murray, Director of the Office for Persons with Disabilities, welcoming those gathered and explaining that the Mass was a next step in reaching out to people with disabilities and their families. She expressed that all are welcome in the church and proceeded on inviting all to greater participation in their faith communities. Karen’s welcoming remarks were then followed by a beautiful Eucharistic Celebration presided by Fr. Michael Harrington, Director of the Office of Outreach and Cultural Diversity, assisted by Deacon Joseph Bryere from St. Catherine Parish in Somerville. Members of the community of persons with disability served within the Mass as greeters, lectors and music ministers.Music was provided by Matt Kelly, Kateri and Maria Thekaekara, active young adults of a Pauline group, yHope, led by Fr. Mike Harrington. The Mass was also interpreted in American Sign Language by Jenna Kish, member of the Deaf Apostolate.

Following the Mass, a reception with light refreshments took place, giving attendees an opportunity for fellowship as well as allowing them to share their ideas, goals and plans for the future of ministry with persons with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Boston. Next year, the Office for Persons with Disabilities plans to host Masses quarterly and provide opportunities for education and awareness about access and inclusion.
