June 15th, 2014 was a very special day for the Ugandan Community, as they celebrated the Fiftieth Anniversary year of the canonization of St. Charles Lwanga and the Ugandan Martyrs.  This event was a wonderful opportunity for Ugandans from the greater Boston area to unite together in their faith. It was also a very important event for non-Ugandans to learn more about the witness of the Ugandan martyrs who in the face of trials laid down their lives for Christ.

St. Charles Lwanga and his companions, a group of 22 Ugandans, were executed on the orders of King Mwanga II. They were beatified on June 6, 1920 by Pope Benedict  XV and later on canonized on October 18, 1964 by Pope Paul VI. The feast day of the Catholic “Martyrs of Uganda” is June 3rd, and it is included in the General Roman Calendar.

The Golden Jubilee Celebration in Boston was a great event for families and showcased the great talent that is in our Ugandan community,as young people danced and sang at the reception. Furthermore, attendees had the honor to celebrate this special day with Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, Bishop of the Diocese of Masaka, Uganda.

The Ugandan Martyrs Day is a special day for not only Ugandans, but for the entire Church. I look forward to this event every year!
