On the beautiful afternoon of June 14th, 2015, the Ugandan Community of the Archdiocese of Boston gathered in their home parish, St. Mary’s Church in Waltham, to celebrate the feast of the Ugandan Martyrs. With great joy, the Ugandan community welcomed Most Reverend Joseph Anthony Zziwa, Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana, as the main celebrant of the Liturgy in honor of the witness of the martyrs we are all called to remember on this special occasion. The Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Michael Nolan, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church, Fr. David M. Ssentamu, Parochial Vicar of the Ugandan Community, along side many Ugandan guest priests.

The celebration began with a procession into the church, lead by a group of young dancers performing a traditional dance to the beat of drums. Parishioners and guests from other Ugandan communities dressed in cultural attire as they gathered on this special day.

The Mass was followed by a lively reception. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal and desserts, live performances by the kids and young adults of the community, a skit and musical performances. Fr. Michael Harrington, Director of the Office of Outreach and Cultural Diversity, was happy  to share few words with the Ugandan Community and be part of this special celebration.

As we celebrate the 130th anniversary of the martyrdom of Charles Lwanga and his companions, may we all be inspired by their love for God and in the words of Most Reverend Joseph Anthony Zziwa, let us be true witnesses of the Risen Christ wherever we live.
