Are You…

… searching for a meaning in life?

… searching for God’s will in your life?

… eager to respond to God’s love?

… desiring to be of service to others?

… interested in learning about religious life?

The above questions were asked to over 50 young people from the Catholic Vietnamese Community at the recent Vocations Day at St. Ambrose in Dorchester, MA. The day was organized around Vocation talks, witnesses, activities, games, music and food. It was organized by Mai Tran and featured talks by Fr. Michael Harrington, the Assistant Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Boston; Fr. Dat Hoang, Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston; and Sr. Christine Hoang Nhi, O.P., the Vocation Directress for the Dominican Sisters of Mary Immaculate Province based out of Texas.

One of the most interesting moments of the day was when the all young people were asked to stand in the middle of the hall and then four young people were pulled out to stand toward the front of the hall and then four more were invited to stand toward the back of the hall. The four in the front were then asked to call out a message to those in the back. Seems easy enough! However, those in the middle were then asked to make as much noise as possible making it almost impossible for those in the front to pass on their message. Those in the middle shook the building with all their yelling and screaming. Those in the front valiantly made every effort to get their message to those in the back but to no avail. The team in the front was drowned out by the revelers in the middle. The team in the back failed to get the message.

Why did the young people carry out this activity? The goal was to show them that when there is a lot of noise in their lives it becomes difficult to hear God’s call. There are so many competing voices for our attention today. If we truly want to hear God’s call, we need to find time for silence and reflection. God calls each one of us. And God is trying to speak to us. However, quite often the noise of the world is drowning out his call.

The young people learned a great lesson and had a great time to boot.
