January 12th, 2014 is a historical date for the people of Haiti. On the 4th year anniversary of the tragic earthquake that devastated Haiti, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Chibly Langlois as the first Cardinal of Haiti. What a gift to the Haitian people!

Cardinal Chibly Langlois was born on a small town  called La Valle, in southeast Haiti. Langlois is known for working tireless for the people, advocating for the poor  and being a humble and faithful servant of the Church. The Haitian community  in Boston has shown a sincere pride to have Chibly Langlois as their first Cardinal and are very grateful to Pope Francis for this special gift. Fr. Stanley Rousseau, currently serving in the Archdiocese of Boston, expressed great hope for the future of the people of Haiti and is confident that “his creation as Cardinal will strengthen the church of Haiti, will get it better organized, will reenergize it and will bring a surplus of zeal and ardor into the mission of Evangelization of the people of Haiti.”

On June 22nd of 2014, the Haitian community of Boston joyfully welcomed Cardinal Chibly Langlois for a celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a fundraising dinner for the retired priests of Haiti.  The Mass was beautiful and the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was standing room only!

As Cardinal Langlois made his way out of the church, an excited crowd surrounded him to take pictures, touch him and get his blessing. It was a beautiful moment! With a smile on his face, he walked through the crowd of people, blessing them and granting their wishes to have a picture taken with him.

Michael Harrington, Director of the Office of Outreach and Cultural Diversity, and Fr. Stanley Rousseau, Parochial Vicar of St. Ann’s Parish in Somerville and St. John’s Parish in Cambridge.  Evening’s other noticeable guests siting at the head table were State Senator  Linda Dorcena Forry and Lorna DesRoses, Director of the Office of Black Catholics of the Archdiocese of Boston. The dinner was held at Boston College High School, and  guests were served traditional Haitian food and were entertained by  talented singers and dancers of the Haitian community of Boston.

It was a truly historic night!
